The World Food Programme is the largest hunger relief NGO, and World Food Program USA is its American fundraising branch. Every year, WPF reaches 80.9 million people, focusing on the most vulnerable populations such as refugees and impoverished women and students.
Hunger hurts more than the individual, it can have ripple effects throughout the community : it makes people less productive, more vulnerable to disease, and contributes to the cycle of poverty.
According to the WPF website, “nutrition investments” have huge economic payoff: children who get enough to eat have higher IQ’s which leads to higher salaries. They estimate that each dollar donated to food causes has a return of $16 USD!
